MMORPG addiction is becoming an ever-increasing problem and concern for people around the world, with reports of people not feeding their children (or themselves) whilst playing, and completely losing themselves within the game world. People don't understand how this is possible, but there are a few key aspects of MMORPG addiction.
New content is always on the horizon in an MMORPG. As soon as you finish one set of quests, or get a shiny new piece of armor an announcement is made by the developers that more of this is coming. MMORPG's are like never-ending games, and with the constant flow of new places to see and new monsters to conquer people must strive to improve their characters via leveling, collecting new gear, and simply by playing more.
In the realms of MMORPG's there are few limitations. An addictive aspect of them is they could very well let you just fly around vast empires, hunt huge beasts, and conquer enemy lands. Whilst to some this sounds lame and geeky, to many this would be a great escape. A way to forget whatever they want to forget and just wander around places that could never exist in the real world, and provide a creative home away from home. For those with low-self esteem MMORPG's provide a way for them to be who they really want to be, but in digital form. They feel that it helps them, and they feel they become a better person, but it actually leads to a wider range of social and mental problems.
People like to meet other people, but more importantly people like to meet people who are similar to themselves. MMORPG's give way to meeting people who may have never crossed paths. With the constant alure of meeting new people, talking to friends via the game, and just socializing digitally in general MMORPG's become very addictive. Friendships can be made (and broken) internationally, and players can be themselves without worrying about any consequences.
This article makes MMORPG's sound great, and to a degree they are. The problem lies in when people take these games far too seriously, spending more time in them then out of them, and in doing so causing harm to others (such as their children). Many clinics have been launching around the world to help deal with MMORPG addiction.
