The red lights on the Xbox360 are caused by overheating, pure and simple. As the motherboard takes too much heat the GPU and the CPU burn out and this causes the soldering to become loose and snap off.
Before this happens you may have noticed the occasional game freeze, the game freeze happens as the soldering is becoming loose but has not quite snapped off. However when it does snap off you will get a form of red lights on your console.
Depending on the number of red lights it will mean different things, the red lights can range from one red light to 4 red lights and here is what they mean:
