In real estate, it could mean you need to keep adding rental property to your portfolio because you don't know when one property might become vacant. If you rely solely on building up on a single location, you could find yourself getting leveled by an unforeseen vacancy issue.
In online business and network marketing, this source of resources is your leads and website hits. If you put all of your marketing into a single lead generation source, it might work for a while, but ultimately you're going to be left without any new leads being generated. So you need to continue to build your marketing presence and education to keep the leads flowing in to keep your business moving.
In the more traditional business of say a fast food franchise, I think it becomes fairly clear that as you get bigger and finally start making real money from your business, you should expand into new restaurants. It's basically the same idea as the above two examples, just a different currency.
The third and final thing I'll point out in this article is the idea of taking constant action toward your goals. This is a pretty universal idea across most game genres, but I found that this lesson was very clearly illustrated in the Unreal Tournament series of games. Unreal is a fast paced, first person style shooting game where players and computer opponents face off against each other in a high speed, intense real time battle using various weapons and vehicles
In several different modes, however, the teams have specific objectives that must be met in spite of the resistance by the opposition. They are nearly impossible to achieve all in one move, as the opposition is often armed better than you are with advantageous defensive positions. The only way to succeed is to achieve your goal, step by step, taking your losses as getting back up and back out in the battlefield as quickly as possible to hammer away more at the resistance until they finally break and fall back, allowing you to achieve one step toward your goal. Now tell me that isn't exactly what doing business is like in the real world.
Those are just three of the lessons I've learned from gaming. So the next time someone tells you that video games are useless or only teach negative and violent things, point them at my article here.
There are many lessons to be found in the way we design our video games because the design is based on the behaviors and interactions of us as human beings. Plus who wants to sit in a lecture about resource management and scope creep when I've got a hive of hostile alien bug creatures
